If you’re any what familiar with the beauty industry, there’s no doubt you’ve heard of Gwyneth Paltrow and her lifestyle brand goop, and if you’ve ever heard of goop, you’ve very likely heard of dry brushing. The gold standard of self care. And what exactly is it? It’s exactly as it sounds. It’s taking a brush to your dry skin. Using a brush like this one or this one, you brush your skin in an upward motion, or to wherever your heart is. Dry brushing is pertinent to keeping our skin, the largest organ of the body, clear and healthy.
What does it do:
brightens the skin
makes your moisturizer/oil more effective
boosts circulation and lymphatic drainage (aka getting all those toxins out of your system)
reduces the look of cellulite
exfoliates old and dead skin
unclogs pores (great for those who get acne on their chest, back, bum, and anywhere else)
How to do it:
With a natural bristle brush, preferably one with a long handle so you can reach all places, stand in the nude in the bathroom or in a tub (because yes, you are essentially exfoliating dead skin off your body and it will fall)
Starting at your feet, brush upwards, always moving towards your heart. Brush several times, in long strokes. Continue to brush everywhere, making sure you’re always brushing towards your heart, no matter where you’re brushing.
To dry brush your face, use a more gentle brush with softer bristles.
Jump in the shower or rub moisturizer in afterward.
Brush several times a week, working up to everyday to see best results.
Clean your brush at least once a week.
